How do I schedule a vacation hold?
To schedule a vacation hold, simply email us at earthspringcsa@gmail.com. Let us know the week you want your delivery held and the week you want your items delivered. NOTE: Vacation holds must be placed at least one week (7 days) before delivery. The latest we will accept a vacation hold is the THURSDAY BEFORE DELIVERY WEEK. This deadline will be enforced. Should you miss the deadline, have a friend, relative, or neighbor pick up your items. We have no problem with this as long as that person is aware of the pickup procedure. We trust that you will inform the person of the process.

How do I add a Fruit, Egg, or Milk Share to my account?
To add one of these member add-ons to your account before the season startslog in to your member account, and click on "Update My Share Options." Select the items you want to add. Upon submission an email confirmation/invoice will be sent to you to either pay online with a credit card or mail a check to the farm. After the season starts, simply email us what items you would like and we'll add them to your account and send you an invoice.

When do my biweekly or monthly eggs and/or milk get delivered?
Biweekly eggs and milk shares are delivered every other week during the season (10  total). Monthly shares are delivered every four weeks (5 total). See *Egg Share* and *Milk Share* sections on our CSA Shares and Products page for complete delivery schedules.

How does a CSA work?
"CSA" stands for "Community Supported Agriculture". At Earth Spring we offer a simple way for people to receive fresh, local produce while supporting a small local family farm.  Members who buy a share of the harvest will receive a weekly box of seasonally available vegetables. Starting in mid-June and going thru mid-October we harvest, pack and deliver your boxes to drop points in your neighborhood. When the produce is ready to pick on our farm then you will see it in your box that week... you ride the harvest with us!

How do I sign up for your CSA?

Can members share a box?
Yes, you can share a membership with someone. Just include all names, e-mails, etc. when you sign up so we can make sure you are all receiving the same information throughout the season.

What is included in the price of my CSA share?
When you sign up for a standard CSA membership you will receive either one small box of produce with 6-8 items each week or one large box of produce with 8-10 items each week for the 20-week season (click here for prices). If you signed up for a Custom CSA share, then you select the items from our Custom members-only E-commerce store that will go in your box each week. If you signed up during a promotional season and received “free box”, note that the “free box” is included in the 20 weeks (i.e., you paid for 19 weeks and will get a box for 20 weeks). Fruit, eggs, milk, cheese, and meat can also be purchased and delivered with your weekly vegetable box... these however are EXTRA and are NOT included in the price of your CSA share. For more information scroll down on this page to the question "Are there other options in addition to vegetables?" or visit our Product Descriptions and Prices pages.

What can I expect in my box each week?
Each weekly box will have seasonal fresh vegetables. In other words, when the produce is ready to harvest on the farm then it will be in your box that week. You ride the harvest with us. We grow a wide variety of crops we have a nice choice for you in the box each week. If one crop does poorly in the field then we know we can rely on another to replace it. Diversity at its best.

Each week your box will have 6-8 items. For example, one item may be 1 head of broccoli, or 1 butternut squash, or 1 bunch of radishes, or 1 bunch of kale, or 3 peppers, or 2 eggplants, or 1/2 lb of sweet potatoes. For specific examples of boxes from previous years visit our Product Descriptions page.

Early in the season you will have a lot of fresh greens like lettuce, kale, collards, spinach, radishes, peas, and broccoli. As the season progresses you can expect beans, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, basil, peppers, carrots, beets, garlic, swiss chard, potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and winter squash like butternut, acorn and pumpkins. Visit our Product Descriptions page for examples from previous years.

Each week you will receive a newsletter telling you what to expect in the box, as well as some recipes you might want to try!

Do you give refunds?
We do not offer refunds.

Can I transfer my credit balance to another season?
Member credit balance of one season cannot be used to fund another season. The revenue from the current season is used for production of the produce at Earth Spring Farm during that season.

When does the 2016 CSA Season begin and end?
The 2016 20-week season begins June 22 and ends the week of Nov 2.

What day will I receive my box?
2016 tentative delivery days are as follows:

WEDNESDAY: all PA drop points, Mundo Verde, FERC, Bloomingdale (Grassroots), Eckington, Capitol Hill, NoMa, Mt. Rainier, Hyattsville, College Park

THURSDAY: DCTC, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Petworth 1 & 2, Park View, Crestwood, Mt. Pleasant, Columbia Hts, Arabella Advisors, JCC, Tenley Village, Cleveland Pk, Cathedral, Palisades, Georgetown, N. Arlington, and S. Arlington, Staten Island

SATURDAY: Mt. Pleasant Farmer's Market Pickup

How do deliveries work?
We deliver the boxes each week on the same day to specific delivery points near to your home or work.  In order to determine where the drop off points are located we look at where the membership is concentrated and look for places that we can drop off the boxes in a weather-protected space that members can pick it up. DROP POINTS can be someone's home, place of work, or a safe public space like a church, yoga center or community meeting place. Each drop point will have a time window in which the produce must be picked up. You must arrive at your drop point on the right day and within the right time frame and then pick up your correct size box, go home and start eating!

The boxes are pre-sorted and everything is in there! If you also have a Fruit Share, you will have to pick your fruit out of a separate box… the checklist at the drop point will say how much fruit to take that week (that info will also be in the newsletter each week). If you have an Egg Share, Milk Share, or ordered cheese or meat, it will be in a cooler at the drop point. If you forget whether or not you have a Fruit or Egg or Milk Share, and whether or not you ordered cheese or meat, no worries! Each week there will be a list of each member at each drop point and what items you should take. Please check your name when you pick up your items! For additional “Drop Point Procedures” visit our Drop Points page.

For more details on deliveries please see questions below.

How often are boxes delivered?
The boxes are delivered once a week on the same day for 20 weeks (see above question for start date).

What time will my box arrive at my drop point?
We start deliveries in the morning and continue until deliveries for that day are complete. We deliver the boxes to the drop points in the same order every week. Therefore, while we can’t give you an exact time when your boxes will be at your drop point every week we will have a good idea of a time frame for each drop point once we get through the first couple of weeks. Also, every week we will send you an email when your box has arrived at your drop point.

How long do I have to pick up my box on delivery day?
We will send you an email when your box has arrived at your drop point every week. For most drop points, you will have until 9pm that day to pick up your box...but please check your drop point's pickup times carefully because some of our schools and business drop points have specific hours for when you must pick up your box! If you do not pick up your box within the correct time frame it becomes the property of the host, no exceptions. Please be respectful of our drop point hosts and the privacy of their home.

What happens if my box is not at the Drop Point when I arrive?
First, make sure you are at the drop point on the right day AND within the correct time frame (this info will all be confirmed with you before you pick up your 1st box). And, as mentioned above, we will send you an email when your box has arrived at your drop point every week. Second, make sure someone did not pick it up for you by accident (especially if you are sharing a box with other folks). After checking both these things and you are sure your box is truly missing, please contact us at the farm ASAP (717-805-7778 or earthspringcsa@gmail.com).

How fresh can I expect my produce to be?
All of the produce is picked within a day or two of your delivery day so you can be sure it is fresh!

Is the produce in my box treated with chemicals?
No! We have been using all organic practices since the farm started in 2010, though we are not currently "Certified Organic". We are in the process of becoming Certified Organic.

Why do we grow without harmful chemicals?
The answer is simple - it's the best for all of us! There is no better food source than that which is grown using growing practices that minimize our impact on the planet while maximizing output from the farm.

At Earth Spring, as with so many other farms who use non-conventional practices, we are keenly interested in good soil health.  Healthy soils are the backbone of the farm and from them we can expect healthy plants that are free from pests and disease. The healthier the soils the less work we have to do in the season dealing with harmful bugs and disease.

Our food system in this country is a wreck! We have become used to and dependent on a few crops to provide us with most of the staples in our diets as well as the diets of our animals and even our fish! (Ahem, corn)

Large corporate farms and big business have tried to monopolize our food choices and reduce the diversity of crops that we eat. Corn, soy & wheat dominate our diets. Supporting local farms that grow a diversity of crops helps us all to improve our diets while expanding the multitude of food choices available in the world.

Can I choose which veggies are in my boxes?
Yes, if you sign up for a custom CSA share.

What do I do with the veggies that I don't use or like?
We try to provide a diversity of vegetables throughout the season. There may be some veggies you don't care for, or there may occasionally be veggies you haven't heard of or tried before... we think you'll be pleasantly surprised by trying some of the Recipes we have on our website (always more being added based on what is in your box that week!) and in the weekly newsletter. If there are still some veggies you don't care for, you can share them with family & friends. Again, we anticipate starting to slowly introduce the option of "Custom" Shares where you will be able to choose what you would like each week from a list we provide to you.

Are there other options in addition to veggies?
Yes! We do offer options for other food from local PA farms to our CSA Members, including fruit, eggs, cheese, and possibly meat. Visit our Product Descriptions and Prices pages fro more details on these products!

FRUIT SHARE
Fruit Shares are delivered weekly and must be purchased for the entire season. The fruit is from local Pennsylvania orchards (Peters Orchard & Rex Farm). The fruit share price includes getting 1 quart of fruit (with the exception of blueberries which are in pints) per week. Each quart will be one type of fruit (i.e., it will not be a quart of mixed fruit). See the Product Descriptions page for an approximate schedule below for an idea of what you may be getting throughout the season.

EGG SHARE
We sell eggs from our own pasture-raised chickens. Options include 1 dozen/week, 1 dozen/every other week, or 1 dozen/month.

MILK SHARE
The milk is from Apple Valley Creamery. Options include half gallons of skim milk, 1.5% milk, whole milk, and chocolate milk in returnable glass bottles. Delivery options include weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly.

CHEESE
While fruit, eggs, and milk are options that must be purchased for the season, cheese is an option that can be purchased weekly. Orders must be placed through our online Cheese store and paid using PayPal only. Place your order by noon the Thursday before the week you want it delivered with your CSA box. Remember to select the same drop point as your CSA share. The cheese is from Spring Gap Mountain Creamery. Options include Jersey Gold Gouda, Shenandoah Sunrise Tomme (similar to parmesan), Farmhouse Feta, West Virginia Blue, Sophie's Select Sharp Cheddar, and Bloomery (similar to camembert/brie). When ordering, remember to choose the same drop point as your CSA share.

MEAT
While fruit, eggs, and milk are options that must be purchased for the season, meat is an option that can be purchased weekly. Orders must be placed through our online Meat store and paid using PayPal only. Place your order by noon on Thursday before the week you want it delivered with your CSA box. Remember to select the same drop point as your CSA share. Chicken is our very own and pasture raised. Pork products come from North Mountain Pastures and beef comes from Landisdale Farm. See our Product Descriptions page for descriptions of cuts of meat available.

Is there a way to get additional produce from Earth Spring Farm?
Yes! You can visit us at our farm or one of our markets or farm stands if you would like to pick up additional produce. Visit our Markets page for more info.

You can also give the gift of fresh local organically-grown produce by purchasing Gift Certificates that can either be redeemed for a CSA box during the season or at markets. For more information or to place an order, visit our Gift Certificates page.

Can I make changes to my membership before or during the season?
There is a feature on our website that allows you to make changes to your membership—with limitations. For example, you can make changes to your address, phone #, email, and can add contact info if there are people sharing your box by clicking here. If you already signed up for a CSA membership and want to add a Fruit or Egg or Milk Share you can do so by clicking here once those shares become available in the spring (once the season starts you have to send us an email if you want to add a Fruit or Egg or Milk Share- you will not be able to do that yourself at that point). If you want to change your drop point, you will have to send us an email at earthspringcsa@gmail.com. You cannot do that yourself.

Can I make an online payment to my account?
If you originally signed up to make payments by check, and want to make a full or partial payment online, you can click here to make an online payment. NOTE that starting in 2015 there is an automatic 2% online transaction fee to help us offset the credit card processing fees!

I can't remember what I signed up for...
I want to check my balance...
How do I do that?
You can request an automated email that will give you an update on your membership status by clicking here.

What do I do if I can't pick up my box (i.e., running late, on vacation, etc)?
It is each Member's responsibility to pick up their box each week, or make sure a friend/coworker/family member can pick it up in your absence. If your box is not picked up within the pickup timeframe for your particular drop point (these details will be confirmed with you before the season begins), your box becomes the property of the host- they can either keep it, share it with a neighbor, donate it to a charity, etc. It is not their responsibility to keep the box out for you later in the evening or put the box out the next day for you. IT IS ALSO YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO LET WHOMEVER IS PICKING UP YOUR BOX KNOW THE DROP POINT PROCEDURES.

NEW FOR 2016... We now allow an unlimited number of "vacation holds" per member during the season. Simply e-mail us BY THE THURSDAY BEFORE week of delivery and we can put a vacation hold on your box and deliver two boxes the following week or any week of your choice. Note that the previous Thursday night is a strict deadline for a vacation hold. Come Friday morning we begin prepping for the following week's deliveries. Please do not contact us the day before or day of a delivery to say you cannot pick up your box. At that point, it's too late. Your box of produce has already been harvested, washed, packed, prepped, and possibly on it's way to you!

NOTE FOR OUR CUSTOM SHARE MEMBERS: If you do not make an order and you have add-ons, your fruit, eggs, and/or milk will get delivered unless you schedule a vacation hold.

Can I visit the farm where my food is grown?
We want all of our members to feel a connection between where their food is grown and what is on their dinner table. We usually have both a Spring and Fall Farm Party where anyone is invited to come tour the farm, meet the hands behind your harvest, eat good food, and meet other CSA members. We have also had CSA members come visit the farm and volunteer for a day!

Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes! We want you to be able to share the gift of fresh produce with your family and friends by either purchasing gift certificates for individual boxes, produce at markets where we are a vendor, or a full CSA Membership. CLICK HERE for more details. If interested in purchasing a gift cert for a full season CSA membership, email us at earthspringcsa@gmail.com.

How do I return my milk bottles?
Bottles can be returned EACH WEEK on delivery day. They should be individually labeled with your name (using masking tape) and wrapped in newspaper to prevent breakage, then placed in a sturdy cardboard box that is also clearly marked with your name. Please make sure the box lids (and labeling, if taped on) are secure so they do not get separated from the bottles during transport back to the farm. There will be a sign-up sheet at the drop point for members to put their name and the number of bottles being returned that week. This information will be used to match the returned bottles back at the farm. We want to make sure that all bottles are accounted for and our members are refunded the appropriate amount.
